Austin Partners in Education (APIE) is looking for motivated, student-centered individuals to join our College Readiness team for the 2021-22 school year! This is a full-time contract position that ends May 27, 2022. Start date is flexible, but ideally in August. 

APIE’s College Readiness program aims to increase the number of students participating in early college high school initiatives throughout the Austin Independent School District (AISD). These initiatives blend high school and college coursework to help students develop technical skills, earn dual college credit, and pursue in-demand career paths.

APIE’s College Readiness Advocates prepare students to meet academic college-readiness benchmarks outlined by the Texas Success Initiative through individualized and small-group tutoring in reading, writing, and math. Advocates also advise their students on college and career pathways and support their students in developing the non-academic skills necessary for a successful postsecondary experience. Lastly, Advocates work closely with program management to build and sustain community partnerships at assigned AISD campuses, and to help build a college-going culture within the school district.

Advocates work collaboratively with their teammates, supervisors, and campus partners to deliver holistic college readiness support for their students. At the same time, CR Advocates work independently to lead small classes and manage a caseload of up to 70 students. During on-board training, CR Advocates receive guidance on how to utilize APIE’s curriculum, create lesson plans, engage students, manage student behavior, and assist students with the college-going process. Advocates continue receiving professional development throughout the school year.

This position is ideal for an individual interested in pursuing a career in the education, social work, and/or nonprofit sectors. In addition to managing a tutoring caseload, CR Advocates will gain experience in creating and maintaining strategic partnerships, effectively managing competing priorities, and developing strong communication skills. Advocates will also need to be responsive and receptive to team leaders across multiple campuses and grade levels throughout the school year.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibility:
  • Lead small class instruction and/or provide small-group, in class support as assigned
  • Manage a tutoring caseload of up to 70 students
  • Utilize APIE’s academic (English Language Arts and Math) and non-academic curricula to create lesson plans and tutoring objectives tailored to each student’s individual learning needs
  • Provide feedback in improving program curriculum and communication strategies with students
  • Advise students regarding college readiness standards at various high schools throughout Austin
  • Create and foster effective relationships with students to ensure program participation and encourage a college-going culture
  • Effectively track student attendance, academic progress, and student engagement
  • Collaborate with multiple APIE team leaders and AISD faculty and staff to increase student attainment of college ready status per the Texas Success Initiative
  • Work with program supervisors to determine students’ academic needs and preparedness for the TSI Assessment
  • Establish, maintain, and utilize partnerships with on-campus contacts
  • Assist Program Supervisors with logistic coordination at assigned campuses
  • Complete other job duties as assigned

Supervision Received: APIE College Readiness Program Coordinators and other APIE team leaders.

Hourly Rate: $17.00

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor Degree in Education, Social Work, or related field
  • Experience tutoring and/or mentoring middle or high school students required
  • Valid government issued ID and access to reliable transportation
  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm during the length of the contract
  • Graduate experience a plus
  • Spanish fluency a plus
Knowledge / Skills / Ability
  • Educational training in secondary education or strong reading, writing, and math skills (pre-algebra, intermediate algebra and functions, and basic geometry and statistics)
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Good organizational skills and flexibility a must
  • Strong communication skills; verbal and written
  • Candidate will exhibit strong initiative and must be able to adapt quickly
  • Candidate will exhibit strong tenacity and problem solving ability, especially in challenging situations
  • Must be positive, personable, and able to relate well to diverse populations, with a particular emphasis on working with young people ages 13-18
  • Strong leadership skills with an ability to foster and grow relationships with middle and high school students, including mentoring and motivating
  • A proven “self-starter” with the ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively while observing and complying with all standards of the supervisions
  • Must have a commitment to work collaboratively and harmoniously with the APIE staff, colleagues, community resource agencies, and school district personnel
  • Able to manage multiple job functions simultaneously

The position is part of the GEAR UP grant program designed to improve student outcomes and readiness for academic success at all levels.

GEAR UP Advocates will be responsible for tutoring 10th grade students with the goal of improving students’ academic performance. The ideal candidates have experience working with children and/or young adults and display the patience and content knowledge necessary to provide quality instruction and support at the high school level.

GEAR UP Advocates work with students both inside and outside the classroom providing individualized and small-group tutoring in reading, writing, and math. Advocates also support students’ social-emotional growth and help students develop the non-academic skills necessary for a successful postsecondary experience. Lastly, Advocates work closely with program management to build and sustain community partnerships at assigned AISD campuses, and to help build a college-going culture within the school district.

  • Provide academic feedback to students, classroom teachers and facilitators on students tutoring progress.
  • Create and foster effective relationships with students to ensure program participation and encourage a college-going culture
  • Collaborate with multiple APIE team leaders and AISD faculty and staff to increase student attainment of course objectives and student passing rates
  • Establish, maintain, and utilize partnerships with on-campus contacts
  • Assist Program Coordinators with logistic coordination at assigned campuses
  • Complete other job duties as assigned
