Austin Partners in Education (APIE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving student college and career readiness through student-centric tutoring and mentoring programs.

With support from the Greater Texas Foundation, APIE has embarked on a three-year project designed to support the development of the P-TECH program at Akins Early College High School. The goals of the project are to help create a program model and framework, support the implementation of work-based learning experiences, and provide direct academic support to P-TECH students.

The Work-based Learning Specialist will be responsible for (1) facilitating and supporting the design and development of work-based learning activities in collaboration with project partners and (2) designing and developing supplemental academic support content and material for college-level P-TECH courses.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a project that will contribute to the growing body of knowledge about effective P-TECH programs. The Work-Based Learning Specialist will report to APIE’s Associate Director and collaborate closely with the APIE P-TECH Program Research and Project Manager.

 
What you will do:
  • In collaboration with the Akins ECHS leadership team and industry partners, facilitate and support capacity-building efforts in the areas of work-based learning and academic support for the Akins ECHS P-TECH programs
  • Collaborate with industry representatives to design and execute work-based learning experiences, including developing and documenting learning objectives, student outcomes, and operational details for career mentoring, facility visits, guest speakers, presentations, job shadowing, internships, etc.
  • Create resources to support the development of work-based learning experiences, such as lesson plans and student pre and post-learning activities
  • Lead the development of supplemental instructional content and strategies to provide students academic support for P-TECH program college-level courses
  • Use promising practices and work-based learning frameworks to guide program development
  • Develop processes for collecting student feedback to inform the design of student engagement strategies
  • Serve as the primary contact for campus staff and industry partner representatives
  • Coordinate the logistics of work-based learning activities and career mentoring activities
  • Support industry partner/s with recruiting mentors
  • Assist in training and supporting mentors
  • Support student recruitment and outreach efforts at feeder middle schools
  • Track and document student participation
  • Provide consistent and timely communication to APIE leadership and school administration
  • Provide recommendations for future program implementation
 
Who you are:
  • You believe deeply in the role of education in driving economic mobility and believe all students should have equal educational opportunities.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills in the areas of collaboration, creative problem-solving, conflict resolution, collaborative planning, and decision-making processes
  • You are a strategic thinker and can develop activities that support both the career and mentorship program
  • You have strong leadership skills with an ability to foster and grow relationships with teachers, campus administrators, industry partners, and students; you demonstrate knowledge and practice good judgment in matters dealing with school and student relations
  • You have three years of experience in education or education-related nonprofit and have a Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field
  • You have educational training/background in secondary education and experience working with socio-economically and ethnically diverse student populations
  • You have a background in instruction or have expertise in instructional content creation
  • You have effective oral and written communication skills and can deliver information in a clear, concise, and logical manner through face-to-face presentations and written communication
  • You have strong organizational skills and will deliver on commitments to partners
  • You can adapt quickly to changing environments and expectations, maintain composure working in stressful situations or unpredictable environments, and can make decisions with limited information
  • You’re confident making decisions independently and can work with minimal supervision
  • You can interpret and leverage data to make sound program decisions
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • You can communicate program vision, goal, and progress effectively to various stakeholders and can facilitate working groups and build consensus
  • You exhibit strong initiative and demonstrate a growth mindset and a willingness to take in new information and perspectives to inform your work; you are comfortable working iteratively
