Secondary School Mentoring

Mentors meet with students one-on-one during the school day to provide student-centered, relationship-based support.

Reasons to Mentor

APIE Mentors show up for middle and high school students to remind them that they matter, help them persevere, and realize their dreams.

Research shows that quality mentoring has a positive impact on young people, such as:

  • Helping students with day-to-day challenges
  • Improving academic outcomes
  • Developing social-emotional skills
  • Providing a sense of belonging

We need mentors who want to:

  • Empower and advocate for their mentee.
  • Create a healthy, supportive environment
  • Appreciate a student’s culture and background
  • Be reliable and provide consistent support
"My mentor teaches me stuff. He is super nice and caring.”
"I dove into mentoring, thinking that I was going to be the one who would be making a difference. I soon learned that I had opened the door and had a new person in my life who would not only expand my horizons but make me laugh and with whom sharing a weekly lunch is the highlight of my week".
