Briana est \u00e9tudiante en troisi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#039;Universit\u00e9 du Texas, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e en communication et leadership.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mon introduction \u00e0 l&#039;APIE<\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>La premi\u00e8re fois que j&#039;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 b\u00e9n\u00e9vole comme coach de math\u00e9matiques \u00e0 la Bertha Sadler Means Young Women&#039;s Leadership Academy, je me souviens d&#039;avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 nerveuse. Les coll\u00e9giennes m&#039;intimidaient et je n&#039;\u00e9tais pas toujours tr\u00e8s dou\u00e9e avec les enfants. Mais en rencontrant les \u00e9l\u00e8ves, mon anxi\u00e9t\u00e9 s&#039;est dissip\u00e9e. J&#039;y ai vu une opportunit\u00e9 de nouer des liens avec mon petit groupe de filles et, je l&#039;esp\u00e9rais, de contribuer positivement \u00e0 leur \u00e9ducation. Au cours de ce semestre de 2019, nous nous sommes rapproch\u00e9es. Elles aimaient me raconter leur semaine scolaire et leur vie sociale avant de commencer le cours. Les activit\u00e9s que nous faisions \u00e9taient amusantes et stimulantes\u00a0; il s&#039;agissait souvent de puzzles ou de jeux d&#039;association. Ce cours hebdomadaire semblait toujours passer trop vite, et je regrettais de ne pas avoir plus de temps ensemble.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La pand\u00e9mie commence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>J&#039;ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que le tutorat me plaisait plus que pr\u00e9vu, alors j&#039;ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de continuer \u00e0 faire du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat aupr\u00e8s de l&#039;APIE au printemps. J&#039;\u00e9tais ravi de retrouver mon groupe d&#039;\u00e9l\u00e8ves. Je savais ce qu&#039;ils n&#039;avaient pas bien compris le semestre pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, et c&#039;\u00e9tait enrichissant de travailler avec eux sur ces concepts. Le nouveau semestre se d\u00e9roulait bien, mais tout a \u00e9t\u00e9 brutalement interrompu en mars avec le d\u00e9but de la pand\u00e9mie. En avril, le coaching en math\u00e9matiques a \u00e9t\u00e9 suspendu pour le reste de l&#039;ann\u00e9e scolaire. Il \u00e9tait difficile d&#039;arr\u00eater le b\u00e9n\u00e9volat aussi brutalement, alors que j&#039;avais nou\u00e9 des liens avec les \u00e9l\u00e8ves au cours du semestre pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, gr\u00e2ce aux r\u00e9unions hebdomadaires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>S&#039;adapter \u00e0 la classe Zoom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la rentr\u00e9e scolaire, \u00e0 l&#039;automne, j&#039;ai re\u00e7u un courriel concernant le coaching en math\u00e9matiques en ligne via la plateforme Zoom. Je me suis inscrit comme b\u00e9n\u00e9vole pour une classe du coll\u00e8ge Dobie. J&#039;\u00e9tais heureux de pouvoir contribuer davantage \u00e0 l&#039;APIE, mais j&#039;appr\u00e9hendais aussi de ne pas pouvoir enseigner via Zoom. Je savais qu&#039;il serait difficile de ne pas travailler aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des \u00e9l\u00e8ves, mais je n&#039;avais jamais imagin\u00e9 que les difficult\u00e9s qu&#039;ils rencontraient dans leur vie personnelle \u00e0 cause de la pand\u00e9mie auraient \u00e9galement un impact sur notre collaboration. C&#039;\u00e9tait difficile, surtout lorsque mes \u00e9l\u00e8ves choisissaient de ne pas allumer leurs cam\u00e9ras ou leurs micros. Au d\u00e9but, les \u00e9l\u00e8ves et moi apprenions \u00e0 nous adapter \u00e0 l&#039;environnement virtuel. J&#039;ai vite compris combien il est difficile d&#039;\u00eatre proche des \u00e9l\u00e8ves lorsque la distance les s\u00e9pare. Nous n&#039;avons jamais pu recr\u00e9er l&#039;exp\u00e9rience du tutorat en pr\u00e9sentiel. Cependant, je savais que m\u00eame si ce n&#039;\u00e9tait pas tout \u00e0 fait la m\u00eame chose, il \u00e9tait important d&#039;\u00eatre pr\u00e9sent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement chaque semaine pour les \u00e9l\u00e8ves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le b\u00e9n\u00e9volat aupr\u00e8s de l&#039;APIE a \u00e9t\u00e9 une exp\u00e9rience enrichissante pour moi. En continuant \u00e0 travailler avec l&#039;organisation dans un nouveau r\u00f4le, je constate directement l&#039;impact des b\u00e9n\u00e9voles sur l&#039;\u00e9ducation des \u00e9l\u00e8ves. J&#039;ai r\u00e9cemment re\u00e7u des retours d&#039;\u00e9l\u00e8ves du coll\u00e8ge Dobie sur leur exp\u00e9rience de coaching virtuel en math\u00e9matiques \u00e0 l&#039;automne. Des commentaires tels que \u00ab Je me sens plus \u00e0 l&#039;aise, donc c&#039;est beaucoup plus facile de poser des questions \u00bb et \u00ab Ils prennent le temps de s&#039;assurer que mes camarades et moi comprenions bien \u00bb m&#039;ont fait r\u00e9aliser que les \u00e9l\u00e8ves appr\u00e9ciaient les efforts que nous d\u00e9ployions b\u00e9n\u00e9volement pour travailler avec eux chaque semaine, m\u00eame s&#039;ils ne nous en parlaient pas toujours directement.
