Briana cursa el tercer a\u00f1o de Comunicaci\u00f3n y Liderazgo en la Universidad de Texas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mi introducci\u00f3n a APIE<\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>La primera vez que me ofrec\u00ed como voluntaria como tutora de matem\u00e1ticas en la Academia de Liderazgo para Mujeres J\u00f3venes Bertha Sadler Means, recuerdo estar nerviosa. Los estudiantes de secundaria me intimidaban y no siempre se me daban bien los ni\u00f1os. Pero al conocer a las alumnas, se me pasaron los nervios. Vi una oportunidad para conectar con mi peque\u00f1o grupo de chicas y, con suerte, contribuir positivamente a su educaci\u00f3n. Durante ese semestre de 2019, las chicas y yo nos hicimos amigas. Disfrutaban cont\u00e1ndome sobre su semana escolar y su vida social antes de empezar la clase que nos asignaron. Las actividades que hac\u00edamos eran divertidas y entretenidas, a menudo un rompecabezas o un juego de emparejar. Esa clase semanal siempre parec\u00eda pasar demasiado r\u00e1pido, y me encontr\u00e9 deseando que tuvi\u00e9ramos m\u00e1s tiempo juntas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La pandemia comienza<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Me di cuenta de que disfrutaba m\u00e1s de lo esperado dando clases particulares, as\u00ed que decid\u00ed continuar como voluntaria con APIE en primavera. Me alegr\u00f3 volver a trabajar con el mismo grupo de estudiantes. Sab\u00eda lo que no hab\u00edan entendido del todo el semestre anterior, y fue muy gratificante trabajar con ellos en esos conceptos. El nuevo semestre iba bien, pero todo se detuvo repentinamente en marzo con el inicio de la pandemia. En abril, el programa de tutor\u00eda de matem\u00e1ticas se suspendi\u00f3 por el resto del curso escolar. Fue dif\u00edcil terminar el voluntariado tan abruptamente despu\u00e9s de haber forjado una buena conexi\u00f3n con los estudiantes durante el \u00faltimo semestre de reuniones semanales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptaci\u00f3n al aula Zoom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cuando empez\u00f3 el nuevo curso escolar en oto\u00f1o, recib\u00ed un correo electr\u00f3nico sobre tutor\u00edas de matem\u00e1ticas en l\u00ednea a trav\u00e9s de la plataforma Zoom. Me inscrib\u00ed como voluntaria en una clase de la escuela secundaria Dobie. Me alegraba poder contribuir m\u00e1s a APIE, pero tambi\u00e9n me preocupaba mi capacidad para ense\u00f1ar por Zoom. Sab\u00eda que ser\u00eda dif\u00edcil no trabajar codo con codo con los alumnos, pero nunca hab\u00eda considerado que los desaf\u00edos que enfrentaban en sus propias vidas debido a la pandemia tambi\u00e9n afectar\u00edan nuestro trabajo conjunto. Fue duro, sobre todo cuando mis alumnos decid\u00edan no encender sus c\u00e1maras ni micr\u00f3fonos. Al principio, tanto los alumnos como yo est\u00e1bamos aprendiendo a adaptarnos al entorno virtual. Aprend\u00ed r\u00e1pidamente lo dif\u00edcil que es acercarse a los alumnos cuando la distancia los separa. Nunca pudimos recrear la misma experiencia que la tutor\u00eda presencial. Sin embargo, sab\u00eda que, aunque no fuera exactamente igual, segu\u00eda siendo importante estar presente cada semana para los alumnos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impacto del voluntariado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>El voluntariado a trav\u00e9s de APIE ha sido una experiencia de aprendizaje para m\u00ed. Al continuar trabajando con la organizaci\u00f3n en una nueva funci\u00f3n, puedo ver de primera mano el impacto que los voluntarios tienen en la educaci\u00f3n de los estudiantes. Recientemente, recib\u00ed comentarios de estudiantes de la Escuela Intermedia Dobie sobre su experiencia con el programa virtual de tutor\u00eda de matem\u00e1ticas en oto\u00f1o. Leer comentarios como &quot;Me siento m\u00e1s c\u00f3modo, as\u00ed que es mucho m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil hacer preguntas&quot; y &quot;Se toman el tiempo para asegurarse de que mis compa\u00f1eros y yo entendamos&quot;, me hizo darme cuenta de que los estudiantes apreciaban el esfuerzo que hac\u00edamos como voluntarios para trabajar con ellos cada semana, aunque no siempre lo compartieran directamente con nosotros.
