APIE Program Model


According to the U.S. Department of Education, high school seniors from low-income families drop out of high school at six times the rate of their peers from high-income families.

Focusing on Austin ISD’s schools located in under-resourced communities and serving predominantly economically disadvantaged students, Austin Partners in Education delivers innovative, volunteer-driven academic and mentoring programs. APIE’s 1,550 volunteers work with students at pivotal junctures in their education, providing a vital extension of academic and social/emotional support to students. Through the flagship Classroom Coaching program, students benefit from small group (3:1 or below) instruction from volunteers drawn from more than 200 Austin area government agencies, businesses and community organizations.

 In the 2017-18 school year, APIE will implement the following programs:

        • Middle School Math Classroom Coaching: Volunteers in the classroom work weekly with students to build a strong foundation in middle school math, putting  them on track to succeed in high school algebra.
        • College Readiness: College Readiness Advocates provide tutoring and college access mentoring to prepare students for college-level coursework.
        • Mentoring (all grades): Volunteers work one-on-one with students during the school day to help students improve their social and study skills, strengthen their communication skills, and build self-confidence.

APIE’s goal is to ensure the internship experience is educational and rewarding for its interns. Our internships and work-study programs allow you to gain valuable experience in a fast-paced non-profit environment focused on promoting academic success for students in economically disadvantaged communities. This is your opportunity to build your resume with impressive work experience and network with community members from all over Austin.

There are 3 ways to participate:

1. INTERN: Internships are unpaid and generally last for one semester with the option to renew for additional semesters.

2. WORK-STUDY: Paid work-study positions may also be available if you have a work-study award from your university.

3. VOLUNTEER: Volunteer positions are available for those who want to support students weekly in the classroom, without the larger commitments of internship and work-study positions.

Internship and work-study Requirements:

  • 10 - 15 hours or more to work Mon - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work professionally in a fast-paced environment
  • Multi-tasking skills while contributing as part of a team on deadline
  • Interest in helping public school students succeed academically
  • Professional appearance - business casual
  • Access to reliable private transportation for tutoring positions.
