Partners in Literature

Partners in Literature volunteers lead student groups in discussions of interesting stories and articles to promote reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. If you enjoy reading or have ever joined or thought about joining a book club, this is the opportunity for you!

Partners in Literature is a fun and structured way to make a difference for students in an underserved community:
  • Each volunteer leads a discussion with a small group of 3-5 students
  • Teams of 5-6 volunteers go into each classroom once a week at the same time
  • Teacher is in the classroom to provide support

Volunteer Commitment: Program meets for 50 minutes once a week during the school day. Volunteers may sign up for a semester, or preferably, a year beginning mid-October 2008 and concluding in early-May 2009 (about 25 sessions total). Volunteers should have some college experience, an enjoyment of reading, and an interest in working with teens, especially with discussing important or serious issues. Training is provided.

Grade Range: Grades 8-10

Participants Say: "Working with high school students is rewarding. I like the fact that as a volunteer I did more than read to my students - we talked about what we read." -- Volunteer

"[I enjoyed] challenging the teens to do what they initially thought they could not do, and seeing their faces when they found out they could!" -- Volunteer
