Partners in Math

Partners in Math (PIM) volunteers engage small groups of students in solving math problems in class during the school day. Volunteers bring their enjoyment of math, relevance, and real-world experience to students in underserved communities.

Partners in Math is a structured and fun way to help students in need of support in math.
  • Each volunteer works with a small group of 3-5 students.
  • Teams of 5-6 volunteers go into each classroom once a week at the same time
  • Teacher is in the classroom to provide curriculum and support
Students, teachers, and volunteers enjoy this program. In a survey given at the end of the 06-07 school year, 100% of teachers in the program believed that Partners in Math benefited their students.

Volunteer Commitment: Program meets for 50 minutes once a week. Volunteers may sign up for a semester, or preferably, a year beginning mid-October 2008 and concluding in early-May 2009 (about 25 sessions total). Most classes take place sometime between 8am and 4pm from Tuesday-Friday. Volunteers should have some college experience, an enjoyment or appreciation of math, and an interest in working with children and/or teens. Training is provided.

Grade Range: Grades 3-10

School Locations: The program operates primarily in Title 1 (economically disadvantaged) schools city-wide. We can find a school to fit your schedule and location preferences.
