Cold calling a business or an organization is not an easy task. One advantage you have is that education and working with youth is a top priority in communities today and is easy to sell. The following is a list of tips to help you successfully discuss your campus and lead potential businesses and organizations to partner with your campus.
- Make sure you have the right company contact. Discuss you program with someone in the community outreach, public affairs, public relations, or human resources.
- Note: If this is a small company, it may be better for you to contact the office manager or the owner directly.
- Call businesses between the hours of 9:00 - 11:30 am, and 1:30 - 4:00 in the afternoon. Always leave your name and telephone number on the voicemail or with a receptionist, along with the best time to call you back.
- Do your own research on the company; be familiar with what they do and the industry. Have in mind several options of support that you'd like from the Partner.
- When you do speak with the appropriate person, introduce yourself, briefly explain the purpose of the call, offer to provide information on your school and schedule a face-to face meeting with them at the campus or their place of business. Discuss ways you believe the business would be a good fit for your campus.
- Make sure you discuss your school's identified top priorities. Be able to provide specifics on the programs and/or school needs, along with budget implications, volunteers needed, etc.
- Thank the business owner or representative immediately for their time. Establish a follow-up process and timeline.
- Make as many person-to-person appointments as possible. If you cannot attend them all, have another team member attend some of these meeting for you. The Adopt-A-School Program Coordinator can accompany on these initial meetings, if you prefer.
