Thanks to a $15,582 grant from the Glimmer of Hope Foundation, over 1000 Austin ISD students will get the chance to experience the Austin Toros semi-pro basketball team's first season at the Austin Convention Center. Through the Glimmer of Hope Pass and Score Program, Austin Partners in Education has been granted the opportunity to reward students for achievement and participation in school programs. A section of 48 seats are reserved for the deserving students and their adult mentors at every Austin Toros home game.

"We are so proud of the hard work our students do every day. This is a wonderful way to recognize their perseverance and success." said Kathrin Brewer, Executive Director of Austin Partners in Education, "We enjoy being able to reward students and to create an opportunity for them to bond with their mentors and each other in a relaxed setting."

The Glimmer of Hope Pass and Score Program is focused on motivating students in areas of academic achievement, attendance, resisting negative peer influences, improved TAKS results and other areas teachers deem appropriate. The program supports the student/teacher and adult/child relationships and maximizes the benefit of the role model identification that young children have with athletes today.

"With the Toros arrival in Austin, we thought this was a great opportunity to help build positive, mentoring relationships between the students and the athletes who often serve as role models for the youth of today," said A Glimmer of Hope Austin projects director David Porter.

The total grant also supports the Austin Toros Read to Achieve Program. Through the program, Austin Toros Basketball Team members visit the school to speak and read to students, who in turn attend a basketball game as a group. Founded in the fall of 2005, The Austin Toros are a NBA Development League expansion team. The regular season will run through April 6, 2006.
