GEAR UP is a federal grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. We are looking for experienced tutors who are passionate about helping students learn and prepare for college to join our team. 

Job Summary

Tutors will be responsible for delivering targeted tutoring to 6th grade students with the goal of improving students’ academic performance in language arts and/or math. The ideal candidates have experience working with children and/or young adults, and display the patience and content knowledge necessary to provide quality math and language arts instruction. Tutors will work with small groups of students, track students’ progress, and provide feedback to students, teachers and supervisors.

Tutor Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with groups of students throughout the day as assigned
  • Utilize materials pertaining to subject matter
  • Plan/create/adjust lessons to advance students’ skills
  • Document tutoring sessions and student progress
  • Employ proven tutoring techniques to help students complete homework, class assignments and prepare for tests
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate and build confidence in students
  • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or learn new tutoring techniques

 Tutor Qualifications and Skills

  • At least 60 hours of college coursework, college degree preferred
  • 6+ months’ experience tutoring children and/or young adults
  • Must be able to pass background check
  • Reliable transportation a must
  • Ability to develop positive and professional rapport with students, teachers and school staff
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong foundation in language arts and math

This is a temporary, full-time position starting in mid-March 2018 and ending in May 2018. The position will reopen as a temporary, part-time position beginning on August 2018 and ending in May 2019.
