School Needs
APIE keeps track of school requests for supplies and other items. As they become available, we facilitate donations of technical equipment, furniture, supplies, and other useful items. To coordinate delivery, please contact Christin Alvarado at calvarado@austinpartners.org or 512.637.0983. Please include your contact information and a description of the item, and we will follow up with you.

Donations of materials can be made directly to schools. Click here to find an AISD school. Click here for a suggested list of elementary school supplies from AISD. Other commonly donated items include: Binders and Folders; Paper; Teacher Supplies: Chalk, Markers, Highlighters, Pens, and Pencils; Books; Backpacks; T-Shirts and Clothing; and Incentives: Free Tickets, Coupons, Stickers, CDs.

Schools can also post their needs, listed below by school, through the APIE site so that potential donors can see how they can help today.

Various AISD Campuses
ITEMS NEEDED: For the 2007-2008 school year there are many families who cannot fulfill their children's back-to-school needs. Main needs are school supplies (clic here for AISD's suggested list) and backpacks for both boys and girls.
RATIONALE: Needy Austin ISD families are unable to meet the costs of back-to-school supplies and are seeking donations from the community. With your generous school supply donations students will be better prepared for the new school year. Please contact Christin Alvarado at 512-637-0983.
ITEMS NEEDED: The Vision and Hearing Program, which is part of the educational support services of AISD, needs donations for eye exams and glasses for less fortunate children. Donations make a powerful difference in the lives of the AISD children! After all, 80% of all learning is through sight.
RATIONALE: The State of Texas requires all students in PK, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and students new to AISD must be screened. Last year 46,000 students were screened and 6,500 were referred for possible vision problems. The Vision and Hearing office processes financial assistance applications for economically disadvantaged children to receive vision services. The Austin Lions Club Sight Conservation Committee (ALSCC) pays for the eye exams and glasses. Any donations would need to be sent to ALSCC, PO Box 283, Austin, TX 78767.

Odom Elementary
ITEMS NEEDED: Native Texas tree for Wildlife Habitat
RATIONALE: Every year, the 5th grade students plant a tree in the Wildlife Habitat. Odom was recently vandalized and the 2005 tree was uprooted. We would love to see this tree replaced!
ITEMS NEEDED: Coverings for Walkways to Portables
RATIONALE: Some of our walkways leak when it rains and other pathways don't have coverings.
ITEMS NEEDED: School Supplies: PENCILS, erasers, pencil sharpeners, books (all levels), clothes (for accidents), socks, hand sanitizer, stickers

Oak Springs Elementary School
ITEMS NEEDED: White Boards and electric pencil sharpeners for each classroom. (30 classrooms)
RATIONALE: We are a Title 1 school and 99% of our students are on free lunch. We don't get a lot of funding and what we do get is spent on learning materials for the classroom. Pencil sharpeners and white boards are considered a luxury. Our teachers spend a lot of money out of pocket money for incentives and learning materials for their classrooms. The white boards will be used for small group instruction and the pencil sharpeners will cut down on the time students spend sharpening their pencils. At the end of the day students can sharpen pencils and prepare for another day learning.
Costs: $1,000.00

Lanier High School
ITEMS NEEDED: Calculations show that Lanier High School will need 150 cans of sealer and will greatefully accept any brand and amount of brick/masonry sealer.
RATIONALE: The brick courtyard floors at Lanier High School was installed in 1966 and never sealed. After 41 years and thousands of students, the bricks are deteriorating at a rapid rate.
Costs: Minimum estimated cost: $3,000. Contact Pete Gallegos at 414-7437 or Nancy Lehmann-Carssow at 414-7449.

Graham Elementary
ITEMS NEEDED: White utility tables. Either 6ft or 8ft. Approximately 20 tables are needed. 6 foot tables are $45 at Sam's Club & 8 foot tables are around $70.
RATIONALE: Graham Elementary has tables, however they are very heavy. It is a back breaking job everytime they set up or put them away. It is a struggle to get parents and staff to assist, because they know they are so heavy. Especially at the end of an event. These will be used at various events such as their school carnival and Family Fun Nights.
ITEMS NEEDED: Marquee. Either a large one or with a digital display. Costs of a marquee is around $4000 to $6000.
RATIONALE: We have a small marquee. It is difficult to display more than one event at a time. Also, we make an effort to post events in two languages.

Oak Springs Elementary
ITEMS NEEDED: Sponsorship of Outdoor School.
RATIONALE: Because of the limited access of most of our students to the natural world outside of the city, they have limited background knowledge of Earth and Life Sciences. In order to narrow this gap in experience and achievement, Oak Springs is seeking funding to take the 5th grade class on a three-day trip to the Outdoor School. The Outdoor School offers economically disadvantaged students the opportunity to participate in a first rate out door program at a reduced price.

We had the opportunity to experience the programs at the Outdoor School last year. We found it academically challenging. It also gave the students a unique opportunity to forge a sense of community. Because it broadened their world view and exposed them to the natural environment, their appreciation and awareness of the natural sciences increased. Additionally, the opportunity to interact in a new environment helped students to build social skills and a sense of community through a unique shared experience. The Outdoor School programs offered intense hands-on experiences. This led to measurable increases in academic performance. Many students said that it was the highlight of their school year.

Since last year's trip was such a positive experience, we immediately booked a trip for this year and secured funding. Unfortunately, unexpected events made it necessary for our benefactor to withdraw her pledge. As a result, we are seeking total contributions of $6,000 so that our students can again benefit from this experience. We are asking you and others to participate in funding to make this a reality for our children. If the firm or interested individuals can help with this endeavor, we would be very grateful.
Costs: The total cost is $6,000 but we have found some sponsorship for the camp and we are still in need of $1,500 to get to our goal of $6,000.

Oak Hill Elementary

Oak Springs Elementary School
ITEMS NEEDED: Oak Springs ES needs to make massive copies of decodable readers for their students. The readers are books that help improve their reading skills. They need a place to make the copies or a place that will make them for Oak Springs ES.
RATIONALE: This would save Oak Springs ES on the amount needed to spend on the copies. They are only able to make a certain number of copies each month and this would exceed what they are able to copy. The books are used by every Kinder - 3rd grader. This adds up to 30,000 copies. Please contact Christin Alvarado at calvarado@austinpartners.org or 512-637-0983.
